Highlight on Hydrosols!
Hydrosols are amongst my very favorite herbal products, but I don't think they are very well known. I thought I would post, first, about what a hydrosol is and will follow with some future posts about specific ones and all their benefits...
What is a hydrosol?🤨 Hydrosols are water-based products made from the distillation of flowers, leaves, and other plant materials. They infuse the essential oils of the plant material into the water making them safer to use than pure essential oils and, yet, retain all the same properties.
What does that mean!?😂 Essential oils, when applied topically or taken internally, should not be used directly and full strength. They need a "carrier" that carries all the benefits of the oil to you, but dilutes it enough to make it safe. That means the water in the hydrosol acts as the carrier for the oils and delivers the benefits of them to your body.
That's cool, how are they made?🤔 All of the plant material is loaded into the still with filtered water. The still heats up the water and plants inside and the steam (which now contains the plant oils) is pushed up and then down through the condenser coils. As it moves through the coils, it is cooled back into water. But the water that comes out is now infused with the essential oils. Voila', a hydrosol!
